Miami Fails; Detroit Moves on to the NBA Finals!

Detroit Pistons played like the defending champions that they are to beat Miami Heat, 88-82, and clinch the eastern conference best-of-seven finals series in Miami Monday night.

Detroit now moves to the finals against the San Antonio Spurs.

Dwayne Wade was back for the all-crucial Game 7, but his rib injury held him to 20 points, and didn't score over the final 15 minutes. Shaquille O'Neal led Miami with 27 points, but the Heat faltered offensively in the final two minutes -- with Wade the biggest culprit when he forced up a 20-footer that missed badly with 1:13 left.

On Detroit's, court, Richard Hamilton scored 22 points, Rasheed Wallace added 20 -- including two foul shots that put Detroit ahead for good with 1:26 remaining -- and the Pistons closed the game with a 10-3 run to hand Miami yet another heartbreaking Game 7 loss on its home floor.

Detroit won for the 10th straight time when needing one victory to clinch a series, the second longest such streak behind the Lakers' record 12-game streak that ended in 2004. They also became the first Eastern Conference team in 23 years to win a Game 7 on the road.

“I'm thrilled. It's like a dream come true. Coming from where I come from, Coltsville, Pennsylvania, and now to get the opportunity to play for my second championship at 27, it's a great feeling,'' said Hamilton.

2005 NBA finals starts Thursday night at San Antonio.

Eastern Conference Finals Game 7: Wade Will be the Factor

Dwayne Wade's absence was greatly felt especially as the Heat left Motor City failing to finish off the best-if-seven Eastern conference playoffs.

And his availability for Game 7 will be key factor not only for the Heat's chances to advance in the NBA Finals, it also plays part on Pistons Coach Larry Bown's immediate future.

The decision to sit Wade was made just before gametime, and without their leading scorer the Heat had no one aside from Shaq O'Neal to give them an offensive boost -- and there were several long stretches when that was exactly what Miami needed.

Richard Hamilton was the hero of the night for the Pistons, he did a little of everything on offense, and the Pistons swarmed and swatted their way to a dominant defensive performance Saturday night to defeat Miami 91-66 and even the best-of-seven series at three games apiece.

Game 7 will be in Miami on Monday night to determine who will represent the Eastern Conference in the NBA Finals.

Hamilton scored 24 points on 10-for-17 shooting with six assists and six rebounds, Tayshaun Prince had16 points and Chauncey Billups made 14.

O'Neal led the Heat with 24 points, Rasual Butler scored 13 points, Kenyon Dooling had 10 Eddie Jones, 3, Udonis Haslem, 8, and Damon Jones, 7.

It all comes down now to the "ultimate game" on Game 7. In Game 7 history, the home team is 74-16. And teams that have been blown out in Game 6 rarely have let that letdown carry over.

Over the last 40 years, there have been 17 instances of teams taking 3-2 leads into Game 6 and losing by more than 15 points. But 15 of those teams came back to win Game 7, including O'Neal's Orlando Magic in the 1995 Eastern Conference finals.

Brown is preparing by showing the Pistons snippets of their playoff victories over the Nets, Pacers and Lakers last season.

Miami has not played a Game 7 since the first round of the 2004 playoffs when it defeated New Orleans -- but that win was a rarity and was a pre-Shaq era. But O'Neal has a lot of experience in this area and he would factor a lot.

MIAMI (AP) -- The look on Dwyane Wade's face was one of pure pain, the discomfort from a strained rib muscle contorting his features as he motioned to the bench.

Wade wanted out, and out he came for the final 10 minutes of the Heat's most important win of the postseason -- an 88-76 victory over the Detroit Pistons that moved Miami within one game of the NBA Finals.

Whether Wade can help the Heat take the last step remains to be seen.

The emerging superstar was injured while executing a crossover dribble in the third quarter of Thursday night's Game 5 of the Eastern Conference finals. He tried to return but the pain was too much, and Wade was uncertain of his availability for Game 6 at Detroit on Saturday night.

``It's very, very painful,'' Miami coach Stan Van Gundy said. ``It feels like he's being stabbed when he breathes. We'll just have to wait and see.''

Wade scored 15 points and Shaquille O'Neal had 20 for the Heat, who received significant contributions from several players -- from some savvy freelancing by point guard Damon Jones to two timely turnaround jumpers by Rasual Butler in the fourth quarter -- in moving as close as the franchise has ever been to the championship round.

But to get there, they'll have to win one final time against a Detroit team that has time and again taken its game to a higher level when circumstances start to turn dire. And they might have to do it without Wade.``I couldn't move in either direction, I could only go straight,'' Wade said. ``Hopefully, me being young, I can recoup real quick and be ready for Game 6.''

Miami's Udonis Haslem had his best game of the series with 14 points and 13 rebounds, helping make up for a sub-par offensive effort from Eddie Jones (seven points). Butler contributed 12 points off the bench, including seven in the fourth quarter, and Damon Jones scored 15.

``Their energy was a lot greater than ours,'' Pistons coach Larry Brown said. ``In Game 4 our big guys got four or five dunks on the break. We didn't see any of that tonight. They just played a lot better.''

Richard Hamilton added 19 for the Pistons. Rasheed Wallace was held to two.

``We're going to win Game 6,'' Wallace said. ``They want there to be a Game 7, there's no other series. If y'all can't see that, y'all crazy.''

In NBA history, the winner of Game 5 in a series tied 2-2 has gone on to win it 106 of 126 times.

Wade went to the locker room after taking a charge from Wallace with 5:08 left in the third period. He returned for the start of the fourth quarter, then motioned to the bench that he needed to come out less than 2 minutes into the period.

``I took the charge because I couldn't move,'' Wade said. ``I wanted to stop play anyway.

``I tried to come back. We got a lot of guys on our team playing through a lot, so I tried to come back and see if I get out there and get going it would feel better, but I couldn't and I didn't want to make it any worse. I had confidence my team could get this victory, and they did.''

He planned to see how the injury felt in the morning before the Heat traveled to Detroit.

Miami took control in the second quarter by holding Detroit to six field goals and forcing six turnovers in the period. An 11-0 run to close the first half left Miami ahead 53-39, and Detroit trailed by double digits the rest of the way.

Damon Jones and O'Neal each started 4-for-4 in the first quarter, O'Neal getting his within Miami's halfcourt sets while Jones got his through freelancing. An ill-advised 3-point attempt early in the shot clock ended Jones' 4-for-4 streak late in the period, and he toned down his act through the remainder of the first half and helped keep the Heat steadily in front.

Hamilton kept the Pistons within striking range, but with no one else contributing on offense, Detroit had a significant lull. Hamilton's 9-foot bank shot with 2:23 left gave the Pistons their last points of the second quarter, and Miami closed the half with an 11-0 run for the 53-39 lead.

Haslem had a wide-open corner jumper and a tip-in to get the lead up to 63-45 early in the third quarter, and a 21-footer by Wade with 5:31 left gave Miami its first 20-point lead, 67-47.

Detroit scored the next six points, and Van Gundy wanted a timeout when Jones pulled off his next piece of freelancing.

Ignoring his coach as he sped over the midcourt line, Jones drove straight to the basket and lofted the ball to O'Neal for an alley-oop dunk. It was a temporary stop to Detroit's comeback, however, as they quickly pulled within 10, but a momentum killer nonetheless.

That was as close as Detroit would get, and Miami was able to stay comfortably ahead through the fourth quarter despite being without Wade, who was averaging 30.0 points in the series.

Pistons Tie Series With Heat 2-2!

Pistons bounced back strongly from a 2-1 deficit by pounding on Miami Heat and take Game 4, 106-96 of their Esatern Conference finals series Tuesday at Motor City, Detroit.

Coach Larry Brown's uncertain future with the team failed to become a distraction for Detroit, instead they focused coming back from self-destructing in Game 3. The series is now tied at 2-2.

"We've got bigger things. We're worried about the Miami Heat, not what the coach is doing or whatever,'' Detroit guardChauncey Billups said.

Detroit took the lead for good after Shaquille O'Neal got into foul trouble midway through the first quarter. As a result, O'Neal was limited to 12 points and five rebounds. Dwayne Wade had 28 points on 10-for-22 shooting as Brown made a switch and used Richard Hamilton instead of Tayshaun Prince to post tight defense gainst the Heat guard.

O'Neal picked up his second foul just 6:14 into the first quarter with the score 11-11, and the Heat were behind 32-25 when he returned 2 1/2 minutes into the second quarter. His third foul came just over 2 minutes later when he was called for bumping Hamilton on a drive.

The defeat was also Miami's first road loss of the postseason. The Heat had been 5-0 against New Jersey, Washington and, until now, the Pistons.

Meanwhile Detroit did not have a single turnover in the first half, and thanks to Hamilton's defense, Wade couldn't get into his scoring groove. Hamilton scored 28 points, Rasheed Wallace had 20, Billups 17 and the Pistons finished with only six turnovers.

“We're in much better shape than we were after the other night. We all felt this would be a great series, and hopefully that's the case,'' Brown said. ``We have to find a way to win one game on the road and take care of our own court.''

Game 5 returns to Miami on Thursday, then everyone heads back to Detroit for Game 6 Saturday. It could be Brown's last home game as coach of the Pistons.

It's 2-1 Lead For the Miami Heat!

The Miami Heat is on a roll and the Detroit Pistons lose their cool in Game 3 of their Eastern Conference finals where the Dwayne Wade-Shaquille O'Neal led Heat captured a 113-104 victory on Sunday.

The boys from Miami now leads the best-of-seven palyoffs series, 2-1.

Wade finished with 36 points, 21 of them in the first half, getting limited in the final 24 minutes by Lindsey Hunter's tight defense and gaining some foul trouble.

While O'Neal scored 24 points, and Eddie Jones had 19.

O'Neal, who haven't fully recovered from his thigh injury and wasn't much of a factor during Games 1 and 2, stepped up and made much needed baskets for the Heat. "Tonight, we needed them, so I just stepped up, took my time, and hit them,'' he said.

"I told him before the game we really needed him,'' Wade said. "He knew we needed him and this is where we needed him the most -- on the road in a hostile environment. And he stepped up big for us. He hit big free throws down the stretch.”

Richard Hamilton led Detroit with 33, while Billups struggled from the field by shooting 6-for-19, and the Pistons missed 15 of their 43 free throws.

Detroit literally self-destruct failing to focus on their opponent, the Heat. Citing unfair calls from the referees, emotions ran high to such a degree that Rasheed Wallance and Chauncey Billups were hit with technical fouls in the fourth quarter after throwing unprintable disgust at the officials.

Billups was eventually fouled out, teammates Ben Wallace, Billups, and Antonio McDyess collected five fouls each.

Even coach Larry Brown didn't hide his displeasure and gave sarcastic shouts realizing his team has lost near the end of the game. "We kind of lost our poise,'' Brown said, "we dug ourselves a hole with a chance to win.''

Game 4 is Tuesday night still in Detroit. Expect the Pistons to collect themselves and pick up the pieces of their crushed team bearing.

“We're too good of a team to have a meltdown like we had tonight,'' Hamilton said. "This late in the season, the Eastern Conference finals, we can't afford to have those types of letdowns. We let little ticky-tack stuff bother us, and we can't do that.''

Wade's The Man! Heat Ties Series 1-1

The Miami Heat was not about to allow another humiliation right in their own backyard. And Dwayne Wade bounces back to lead his team into a 92-86 victory over the Detroit Pistons to tie their 2005 Eastern Conference best-of-seven series, 1-1.

With fellow Heat star Shaquille O'Neal clearly yet to regain his old playing form, Wade made 40 points and leaving Tayshaun Prince helpless to stop him from firing up. Wade eclipsed 30 points for the sixth time this postseason and reached 40 points for the second time.

Teammates O'Neal added 17 points and 10 rebounds and Damon Jones contributed 14 points.

On the Pistons side, Richard Hamilton scored 21 points and Tayshaun Prince had 17. Prince's tight defense on Wade was huge factor in stalling the latter's efforts in Game 1. But on Wednesday the Heat power guard decided it was time to take over.

"I know I'm human and am going to have some bad games, but it's all about how you come back the next day,'' he said.

Wade was aggressive going to the basket right from the start, ending the first quarter with eight points, four assists and two rebounds to help Miami to a 24-23 lead. Damon Jones went 3-for-3 from the field in the second quarter, including 2-for-2 on 3-pointers, and Eddie Jones hit a 3-pointer as Miami outscored the Pistons 23-13 to gain a 46-37 halftime lead.

Detroit's five 3-pointers in the third quarter helped them make a comeback from a 14-point deficit. Wade's fourth-quarter outburst started with a bank shot and a driving dunk and continued on to score Miami's next 10 points putting the Heat ahead 78-76 with 5:12 left.

Detroit tied it once more but the triple efforts of Wade, O'Neal and Jones only proved too much to handle for the Pistons.

Game 3 of the 2005 Eastern Conference finals series will move on to the Detroit homecourt on Sunday night. You can bet that Detroit will not let this one simply slip out and Dwayne and his gang could just as well be entering the shark's den on Sunday.

Shaq is Back But Pistons Steal Game 1, 90-81

The Detroit Pistons came and conquered Miami Heat in Game 1 of their Eastern Conference finals series,90-81,in Miami on Monday. Mismatches plagued the Heat but favored the defending champs to lead the series 1-0.

The game also marked Shaquille O'Neal's return to the Heat lineup still recovering from a nagging right thigh injury. He opened the game by making his first four shots, but Detroit's defense kept his boys from running their offense.

In the end O'Neal's 20 points on 9-for-14 shooting with five rebounds wasn't all that much of a factor.

Another Heat star, Dwayne Wade, also failed to shine scoring just 16 points on 7-for-25 shooting while struggling to break fee from Tayshaun Prince's tight defense. He himself assessed his performance as "Terrible!"

Wade was sensational in Miami's first two playoff sweeps over New Jersey and Washington, averaging 28.6 points, 8.4 assists and 6.6 rebounds in those eight games while shooting 51.9 percent from the floor.

The Heat ended the first quarter with a very narrow one-point lead at 25-24 but was behind by 14 points in the third quarter and then rallied to tie it at 80 with 5:11 left.

But the comeback was in vain. With the Heat trailing 82-81, Wade missed a 20-footer from the right wing with 4:01 remaining. Miami wouldn't score again.

Rasheed Wallace led Piston scrorers at 20 points, Chauncey Billups added 18, Richard Hamilton had 16, Ben Wallace and Tayshaun Prince each scored 13. All five Detroit starters reached double figures.

On the Heat bench Eddie Jones topped scorers with 22 points, followed by O'Neal with 20, and Dwayne Wade had 16.

Game 2 will be on Wednesday still in Miami. If defending champs Pistons continue their dominance Shaq and his band of brothers are in deep trouble, especially with Games 3 & 4 moving to the Detroit homecourt.

All Pumped Up for Game 1 of 2005 Eastern Conference Finals

Game 1 of the 2005 NBA Eastern Conference finals between the Miami Heat and Detroit Pistons all set for Monday at Miami.

"It's going to be a battle royal,'' is how Pistons forward Tayshun Prince would describe it. "This is where everybody wanted to be.'' Indiana busted the Los Angeles Lakers' bid to win the 2005 NBA finals last year, after that star player Shaquille O'Neal demanded to be traded.

With him landing in Miami, the Detroit boys knew they will face him again in this year's Eastern Conference finals. And they expect O'Neal to be looming near the basket come Monday night.

But O'Neal has been plagued with a thigh injury for more than a month now and had to miss Games 3 and 4 of their semifinal series against Washington. The Heat has had a full-week including O'Neal who's been trying to get better.

"Shaq will be ready,'' said Detroit's center and NBA's Defensive Player of the Year, Ben Wallace. And as they go against O'Neal, the Piston will likely rotate against Dwayne Wade as well.

Detroit advanced to the conference finals for a third straight year with an 88-79 win at Indiana in Game 6. In this playoff series many would see Detroit as the underdogs but the boys are "pumped up" for it and will not hide their excitement for this much-anticipated series.

"It's a match up everybody wanted," Rasheed Wallace said. "All year we've been on everybody's back burner, that's fine.''

As for the wagering side of it, the odds on which team will win in how many games are pretty close. At Pinnacle Sportsbook Casino, the Heat has the slight edge over the Pistons. Judging from this, this is certain to be tight series.

Pistons Beat Pacers, 88-79; Clinch Finals Slot

It's Detroit Pistons and the Miami Heat for the 2005 NBA Eastern Conference Finals. Pistons beat Indiana Pacers, 88-79, on Game 6 of their semifinal series Thursday.

The Detroit victory also meant sending Reggie Miller into retirement without winning a single championship in his 18-year-career. It was the final game for Miller, the NBA's 12th-leading career scorer, and his was a 3-pointer with under 2 minutes left to pull Indiana to 82-79.

Richard Hamilton led the Pistons scoring 28 points, Chauncey Billups added 23 sending the team to the conference finals starting Monday at Miami.

At the end of the game, the crowd chanted, "One more year!''

"It was definitely very emotional,'' said Hamilton. "I don't think I've ever been in a game where a team that's about to move on and a guy comes out of the game and the other team is cheering," he added referring to Miller.

The Pacers had led almost the entire first half and had manage to stall every Detroit rally until two straight baskets by Hamilton put the Pistons ahead early in the fourth quarter. The final score, at 88-79, marked the Pistons' biggest lead of the game.

Detroit has won eight consecutive playoff series clinchers over the last three seasons. The defending NBA champions will now face the Miami Heat in an excting conference finals. Heat fans are praying Shaquille O'Neal would be fully recovered to lead his team to the 2005 NBA finals.

Pistons One Win Away From Clinching Finals Spot

The Detroit Pistons are one win shy from claiming the second of two spots for the 2005 NBA Eastern Conference finals after beating Indiana Pacers 86-67 in Game 5 of their semifinal series on Tuesday.

But Pistons fans shouldn't party yet as the Pacers could bounce hard and tie the series yet again when they play Game 6 at their homecourt in Indianapolis on Thursday, stretching the semifinals to an exciting Game 7.

Or the NBA defending champs could end it right there and move on to the final series against the boys of Miami Heat.

Ben Wallace led the Pistons take off and lead 3-2 against the Pacers. Wallace had 19 points, 11 rebounds and three blocks. Followed by Tayshaun Prince with 16 points and 12 rebounds, while Chauncey Phillips and Richard Hamilton each scored 13. Rasheed Wallace added 10 more.

On the other side of the court, Jarmaine O'Neal scored 14 points and Stephen Jackson had 12. Other top scorers were Reggie Miller with 8-- his third single-digit scoring game of the series --and Jamaal Tinsley contributed 2.

Detroit had a 23-21 lead after the first quarter. Indiana held Detroit scoreless for over four minutes in the second quarter and went ahead 31-27. The Pistons took over and outscored Indiana 27-11 in the third quarter, taking a 69-46 lead. The Pacers pulled within 20 early in the fourth, then Detroit scored eight straight points.

Indiana coach Rick Carlisle used all four of his second-half timeouts in the third quarter, trying to slow down the Pistons, it failed miserably. League rules require each team to call a timeout in the fourth quarter, but because Carlisle didn't have any left, the Pacers were called for a technical foul with 2:17 left.

"We're disappointed, but not distraught,'' Carlisle said. "We know what we have to do. We faced an elimination game less than two weeks ago (at Boston) and our guys fought and won a Game 7 on the road.''

If they reach Game 7, that is. "This is going to be a true test of our will,'' said O'Neal. "If we can't win a game on our home court, we better be ready for next season.''

Wallace, on ther hand, can't help but show glee over his team's soearing performance on Tuesday. "I think it's probably one of our best performances,'' he said. "When we play like that, we're a tough team to beat.''

If the series stretches on to Game 7, it will be back at The Palace on Sunday.

Can Shaq Heat Up the 2005 Eastern Conference Finals?

Who will face the Miami Heat for the Eastern Conference Finals of the 2005 NBA?

There are two teams battling it out to grab the coveted post, the Indiana Pacers and Detroit Pistons, currently tied at 2-2 in their best-of-seven Eastern Conference semifinals series.

The series was tied on Sunday when the Pistons overpowered the Pacers after a third-quarter comeback led by Chauncey Billups who scored 29 points that night. Game 5 will be played at Detroit on Tuesday.

The Heats, meanwhile, finished off their second straight playoff sweep on Saturday ousting the Washington Wizards 99-95 in Game 4 of their semifinal series.

Shaq O'Neal and the rest of his Heat buddies are enjoying a full week off while waiting for the Finals. This much needed break, however, should be complimented to star player Dwayne Wade. The Miami boys had gone without the injured O'Neal in each of the last two games because of a nagging thigh bruise.

Dwayne to the rescue scoring 42 points in the series-clincher, 22 in the third quarter when he was a perfect 7-for-7 from the floor and 8-for-8 from the foul line during Miami's 40-25 momentum-swiping run.

Though Wade hasn't had to fend off all rivals alone. O'Neal averaged 18 points and 8.2 rebounds in his six playoff games, numbers that most NBA centers would consider spectacular. So Shaq's improved health will be critical for the Heat in the coming Eastern conference finals. Even Wade can't wait for him to return to form.

"We know he's going to come back hungry and mad, and everybody knows what a mad Shaq is like,'' Wade said.

Heat fans are praying the full-week break will be enough for the Shaq to recover. Game 5 of the Pistons-Pacers game is on Tuesday, May 17. We may know who's going to battle the Heats on Thursday, or it could stretch on 'til Sunday.
